E-payments are payments that are initiated, processed and received electronically. The European e-payments market is not one without frontiers yet. Consumers, merchants and providers alike still show a strong home bias in their activities. Albeit, there are already the first innovative e-payment schemes that can be used across borders and with different currencies. The regulatory framework for e-payments is also further evolving.
Against this background, the European Central Bank (ECB) is holding a conference on 'E-payments without frontiers' on 10 November 2004, focusing on issues related to e-payment initiatives, security and regulatory issues. The aim of the conference is to provide an overview of recent developments and issues related to e-payments. The scope is on retail services that support e-commerce transactions (business to consumer, B2C) or electronic payments between consumers (person to person, P2P) and that constitute new concepts, beyond the basic traditional payment instruments provided by the banking industry. Recent developments of the e-payments market will especially be set into a Pan-European and regulatory context.
The conference will be held at the ECB's premises in Frankfurt am Main. As the ECB's capacity for hosting this conference is limited, attendance will be on invitation only. For the detailed conference programme please see below. Summaries of the presentations and the panel discussion will be published on this page after the conference.
