At this year’s exhibition within our series on “Contemporary Art from the Member States of the EU”, the spotlight is on Slovenia – a country that is celebrating 20 years of independence on 25 June 2011.
Showcasing 18 artists and more than 50 pieces of their work, this exhibition – organised in association with Banka Slovenije – provides a broad snapshot of the creations of contemporary Slovenian artists. While paintings take centre stage, also represented are the disciplines of photography, sculpture, drawing and video; indeed, for the first time, three film evenings form part of the exhibition programme, one of which will feature a work by the internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Ema Kugler.

Although Slovenia was still a federal republic of Yugoslavia at the time, it was as early as 1948 that the Slovenian cultural scene started to distance itself from the language of socialist realism that prevailed in the majority of socialist states. In the period that followed, the artists participated in the international movements of the day, developing these further. While artists active around the time of the country's independence often incorporated political and social statements, today they engage with a vast range of topics. Intimate personal worlds, fantasies and stories play just as much of a role as questions on the representational power of images in a world living under the burgeoning influence of visuals and the media, as does the conceptual – oftentimes interdisciplinary – experimentation with artistic processes and materials.
