The President of the Federal Republic of Germany has awarded the President of the European Central Bank, Dr. Willem F. Duisenberg, the Grand Cross 1st class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The award is in recognition of Mr. Duisenberg's services to European unity, the achievement of the single currency and the stability of the euro.
Mr. Duisenberg received the award from the Federal Minister of Finance, Hans Eichel, at a ceremony in Frankfurt am Main today.
